Now in its second century of serving others, the Boy Scouts of America have fed millions of hungry people through their annual “Scouting for Food” drive to benefit the hungry in their communities.
This year, the Grand Canyon Council is seeking a new record: Collect 300,000 pounds of food to help the needy families of Arizona.
In early February, thousands of Boy Scouts will canvass local neighborhoods across the state to invite residents to participate in the food drive. The Scouts will deliver door hangers and empty Bashas’ shopping bags. Making it easy for residents to participate. Simply leave your food donation outside your door on Saturday, Feb. 5 and the Scouts will do the rest – picking up the food and delivering it to local food banks.
Last year, St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance received more than 12,000 pounds of food from this event, and the Scouts are looking to increase that total this year.
For those in the West Valley who might not received door hangers and won’t have pickups in their neighborhoods, St. Mary’s will have a special drop-off location at the Bashas in Surprise at 15367 West Waddell Road. Boy Scout troops will also be station at other Bashas’ sites around the Valley on Feb.5 to encourage shoppers to participate in the food drive.
Be on the lookout for those door hangers and bags. And check your pantry for food items or, if possible, do a little extra shopping this week to help make “Scouting for Food” a huge success.
