Obese women, kids may not know weight

Women and children who are overweight and obese may have a skewed vision of just how heavy they are, a new study finds, as many underestimated how much they actually weighed.
Researchers surveyed 111 mothers (average age about 39) and 111 children ages 7 to 13. Among the study participants, about 66 percent of the mothers were overweight or obese, and about 39 percent of children were overweight or obese.
About 82 percent of the women who were obese underestimated their weight, and about 43 percent who were overweight low-balled their weight. Only about 13 percent of normal weight women underestimated their weight.
Among the children, about 86 percent who were overweight or obese underestimated their weight.

Arizona Food Prices RISE

6% rise possible amid fuel hikes, damage to crops

Arizona consumers who have been hammered at the gas pump by soaring prices can expect to get slammed at the grocery store in the near future by a sharp rise in the cost of food. Higher wholesale prices for vegetables and various grocery staples, coupled with a jump in fuel and energy costs, are expected to push food costs up as much as 6 percent this year at metro Phoenix stores. That would rival a 5.5 percent jump in 2008, which was the largest gain in almost 20 years. Such a surge in prices would end two years of declining and flat food prices. Blame winter crop damage, higher commodity costs and global grain shortages.

How to Make the Most of the “Stretch Your Food Dollar” Menu

You’re clipping coupons, watching for the weekly food circular in the mail, and planning your weekly menus. But are you missing something?

Well, yes, Arizona Farm Bureau’s “Stretch Your Food Dollar” Menus!
Arizona Farm Bureau began quarterly market basket surveys the fourth quarter of 2006. While the surveys are unscientific, they serve as a clear gauge of actual price trends across the state.

St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance Food Drives Never End at Goodwill and U-Haul locations around Arizona

While more than 1,700 Food Drives are held to benefit St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance each year, there are two places where food drives are always going on.
If you have a non-perishable food donation and can’t get to an SMFBA location, remember that you can take it to any Goodwill or U-Haul location. Just look for the food drive boxes at the front of the stores with the St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance logo, or let those working the store know you are making a donation. No matter how large or small, each donation plays an important role in feeding Arizona’s hungry.
St. Mary’s will provide enough food for 275,000 meals today. And the Food Bank do it again tomorrow, but only if the benevolent people of Arizona continue their long-standing tradition of delivering more than food … hope.

THANK YOU National Pork Board! Thanks 60,000 times over!

St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance would like to sincerely thank the National Pork Board for its donation of more than 12,000 pounds of pork to the Del E. Webb Distribution Center this morning.
Representatives from Arizona, Minnesota and North Carolina pork producers were on hand, as ...well as a television crew from Channel 5 to document the delivery. America’s 70,000 pork producers help feed the world and are committed to ending hunger by supporting local food banks. The pork provided in Phoenix equates to nearly 60,000 meals for families in need.
